I can use variables that represent quantities in real-world or mathematical problems and construct simple equations and inequalities.  I can use equations and inequalities to solve multi=step problems with rational numbers.

I can recognize and represent proportional relationships between quantities and use proportional relationships to solve problems.

I can use facts about supplementary, complementary, vertical, and adjacent angles in multi-step problems to write and solve equations for an unknown angle in a figure.

I can draw freehand, with ruler, protractor, and compass, geometric shapes with given conditions.  I can solve problems involving scale drawings of geometric figures, including computing actual lengths and areas from a scale drawing.

Eighth Grade Common Core Targets




I can use two variables to represent real world and mathematical problems leading to systems of linear equations.  I can solve systems of linear equations algebraically and graphically.

I understand what a function is and I can represent and compare linear and nonlinear functional relationships.

I can explain a proof of the Pythagorean Theorem and its converse.  I can apply the Pythagorean Theorem to determine unknown side lengths in right triangles in real-world and mathematical problems in two and three dimensions and I can use the Pythagorean Theorem to find the distance between two points on a coordinate grid.

I can verify experimentally the properties of rotations, reflections, and translations.  I can describe the effect dilations, translations, rotations, and reflections on two-dimensional figures using coordinates.
